North Carolina is rich in the diversity and quantity of its water resources. Our Mountain streams and Coastal Plain bogs, bay lakes, pocosins, and blackwater streams are unique ecosystems. Situated between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Coast are over 1,800 lakes, 10 acres or larger.

Many of these waters are in trouble. A growing population, poorly planned development, exotic plants and animals, and increased demands threaten the quality of our lakes. Problems become evident when our waters become unsightly or are unsafe for drinking, fishing, and swimming.

The North Carolina Lake Management Society (NCLMS) was formed in 1994 to bring together individuals and groups with shared interests in lakes. We consist of lake homeowners, scientists, agency representatives, and citizens. We invite you to learn more about how lakes function and how you can become more actively involved in their stewardship.

The Society is managed by a membership-approved Board of Directors consisting of a President, President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, and two Members-at-Large. Members participate in one or more standing committees, which make recommendations to the Board.
